"Beneath the Valley of the VHS" (8 CULT RARITIES!)
Brooklyn, United States
8 Cult Rarities, One Week Only!
*** All Screenings introduced by Guest Programmer ZACH CLARK ***
"BENEATH THE VALLEY OF THE VHS" is a week-long series of must-see cult rarities and art-house trash that are not available on DVD or Netflix. Guest programmed by former video-store clerk and reRun filmmaker Zach Clark (MODERN LOVE IS AUTOMATIC, VACATION!), the series serves as a springtime companion to this fall's "VHS TURKEYS 2" program.
"BENEATH THE VALLEY OF THE VHS" runs April 27 - May 3. All tossed-off descriptions courtesy of Zach Clark:
Friday, Apr. 27:
SALVATION!: HAVE YOU SAID YOUR PRAYERS TODAY?
(Friday 4/27, 7pm)
1987, dir. Beth B., 80 minutes
[NYT review] "No-wave cinema auteur Beth B's second feature is an intense, grimy comedy about a country bumpkin (X's Exene Cervenka, married onscreen to her future ex-husband Viggo Mortensen!) who teams up with a skuzzy televangelist and becomes a Christian heavy-metal superstar. Totally fucking awesome."
MONDO NEW YORK
(Friday 4/27, 10pm)
1988, dir. Harey Keith, 83 minutes
[Watch the trailer] "Follow an ever-silent, unflinching blonde chick through the cavalcade of perversion and performance art that was 1980s NYC. All your favorites are here: Lydia Lunch! Joe Coleman! Annie Sprinkle! Karen Finlay! Well, maybe not ALL your favorites. BYOH (Bring Your Own Heroin)."
Monday, Apr. 30:
THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION,
PART 2: THE METAL YEARS
(Monday 4/30, 10pm)
1988, dir. Penelope Spheeris, 93 minutes
[Watch a clip] "Penelope Spheeris followed her landmark punk doc debut with this sequel, which stares straight into the vapid, slimy hole of the L.A. metal scene of the '80s. The interview with WASP's Christ Holmes, totally wasted and floating in a swimming pool in front of his mom, is the stuff of L-E-G-E-N-D."
Tuesday, May 1:
A MAN LIKE EVA
(Tuesday 5/1, 7pm)
1984, dir. Radu Gabrea, 87 minutes
[NYT review] "Hey look, a Rainer Werner Fassbinder biopic! Dive into the non-stop hell that is moviemaking the RWF-way. Jealousy, temper tantrums, and sex-sex-sex! The icing on the cake is that a woman (Eva Mattes) plays Fassbinder! Das ist wacky."
(Tuesday 5/1, 10pm)
1994, dir. Christoph Schlingensief, 79 minutes
[Watch a clip] "Pretty much the best screwball/action/political satire/gore movie about neo-Nazis ever, starring Margit Carstensen and Udo Kier as a crazy, horny priest. John Waters wishes he was this irreverent! Fassbinder dreamed of being this incendiary! Oh the Ger-manity!"
Wednesday, May 2:
(Wednesday 5/2, 7pm)
1973, dir. Curtis Hanson, 85 minutes
[IMDb] "a/k/a SWEET KILL, from the director of L.A. CONFIDENTIAL. Watch '50s heartthrob Tab Hunter kill naked women in the '70s (and look for Angus Scrimm, the Tall Man from PHANTASM). The box cover calls it "a nightmare of sexual frustration ... erotic guilt ... and death!" I did not add those ellipses."
(Wednesday 5/2, 10pm)
1979, dir. Lloyd A. Simandl, 74 minutes
[Watch a clip] "Soon-to-be-murdered-in-real-life Playmate Dorothy Stratten (whose story was the basis of Bob Fosse's STAR 80) plays a bratty heiress who is kidnapped by her evil uncle and "disciplined," which basically means lots and lots of softcore S&M. Her only friend is a wind-up mechanical mouse. Seriously. Slee-zee!"
Thursday, May 3:
(Thursday 5/3, 7pm)
1989, dir. Andy Milligan, 91 minutes
[IMDb] "I programmed this movie in last November's "VHS Turkeys" and no one came to see it. So, I'm going to keep programming it until people show up. Poor Donnie wants to make friends, but it just doesn't work out. Pervy and misanthropic, even by Andy Milligan standards! See it! I dare you."
